5 Paint Distant Trees, Value 3

As you’ve anticipated, darken the mixture and scumble in the next layer of distant trees; this is the layer where you will paint the darker foreground trees. Also, you will add the first hint of tree trunks here. Take a small dab of this darker mixture, thin it slightly, then use your no. 4 round sable to carefully paint in the first layer of tree trunks. Next, go back to your no. 6 bristle to scumble in this layer of tree leaves. This time you can be a little more specific about their forms. Notice that you can see all three values; this creates a sense of depth. If you have overpainted too much of the background, you may need to dab in a few areas of value 1 or value 2 to open up some pockets of negative space.
